What is Megazilla?

We can’t be entirely specific about all the details yet. Still, a September report by CarBuzz revealed that Ford has already applied to use the name ‘Megazilla’ on an upcoming engine.

While this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the Megazilla project, the Class 12 filing of the engine name ensures that it will be a crate motor. Crate motors are ready-to-use high-performance engines that can be purchased without a vehicle—often by DIY car-builders and drag-racers—off the shelves of vehicle manufacturers.

Ford first hinted at the Megazilla engine in December 2020, when Ford Performance Product Manager Mike Goodwin said: “We’re also working on a super-secret project known as the Megazilla.”

Godzilla and Beyond

Goodwin spoke of increasing the top Ford motor’s capacity beyond the horsepower generated by Ford’s famous Godzilla production crate engine. He hinted that Megazilla could have the capability to go above 490 horsepower.

And since then, a rumor from the website Ford Authority in May 2021 suggested Ford was considering bolstering Godzilla by adding twin turbochargers. Some analysts expect that if this happens, which is indeed called the Megazilla, it could mean power of up to an excess of 800kW of horsepower.

As with Godzilla – on which Megazilla is likely based—this new “Mega” V8 could be sold as a high-output crate motor from Ford Performance.
